Your Past Doesn’t DEFINE YOUR FUTURE

As Seen in Newsweek

An article was posted in Newsweek sharing the personal account of Lakia Elam, the Founder of Magnificent Differences Consulting: “I Stole for my Child. I Felt Humiliated When My Felony Resurfaced.”

In the piece, she recounts several stories about her childhood and teenage years – including details that many “professional” business owners would prefer to keep hidden.  However, in her own words, Lakia shares,

“After 20 years of silence, it's time to lay it all out there. It's time to tell my story, and be proud of who I am and what I've fought through. It's time to show others that authenticity, even in the face of discrimination, is the only way forward.”

In revealing her history and background, we hope Lakia’s experiences serve as a backdrop to:

  • Further inspire others

  • Bring more light to the need for equitable practices

  • And to re engage the hearts of professionals to treat one another as real humans!

An overview of the article is provided below, but click here to read the full piece, originally published in Newsweek on June 7, 2024 by Shane Croucher.

Whatever your career may take you - we hope it inspires you to put the “human” back into “human resources!

Early Beginnings: Community Bonds and Sweet Memories

Growing up in Washington, D.C., I was born into a unique family dynamic. My mom was just 13 when I came into the world, and she bravely navigated the challenges of teenage parenthood. With the support of both of my grandmothers, who were single mothers themselves, I was raised in a close-knit community of love and care.

From the crack of dawn coffee sessions with my grandmother to late-night takeout dinners with the whole family, my early years were filled with precious moments that shaped who I am today. Being surrounded by my extended family, including teenage parents, aunts, uncles, and godmother, taught me resilience from a young age.

Navigating Turbulent Waters

As I grew older, the crack epidemic in our neighborhood cast a shadow over our lives. Despite my mother's best efforts to shield me, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of addiction and the harsh realities of our environment.

By the time I was a teenager, I had already shouldered significant responsibilities, caring for my younger siblings and ensuring their well-being. Balancing school with childcare became the norm, as I faced challenges that were far beyond my years.

Despite the hardships, I persevered, determined to create a better future for myself and my family. When I became a mother at a young age, the weight of responsibility only grew heavier, but I refused to let circumstances define me.

Striving for Education and Success

With unwavering determination, I earned my GED shortly after becoming a mother. Despite facing judgment and discrimination, I pursued higher education and professional opportunities, refusing to let obstacles derail my dreams.

Today, I stand as a college graduate, a business owner, and a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges. Through my HR consulting firm and career coaching, I empower individuals to overcome adversity and thrive in their own journeys.

Fighting for Belonging and Recognition

Despite my accomplishments, the fight for acceptance continues. Discrimination and microaggressions remain prevalent, but I refuse to be silenced. By sharing my story and advocating for change, I strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

As I continue to navigate life's challenges, I remain committed to authenticity and resilience. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of using our voices to effect change.

To anyone facing adversity, I offer this message: your story is worth telling, and your voice deserves to be heard. Together, we can flip the script on discrimination and build a future where everyone belongs.
